Domains

In our last report we talked about finding a good domain company and purchasing a great domain name.   As we talked about before this is critical because having a great domain name is essential in getting good indexing within the search engines?  We also discussed how to index your own domain with Google which saves you substantial dollars.

In this report we want to talk about keywords!  Good keywords are critical in getting the search engines to pick up your domain.   Understanding keywords and picking the right ones is not difficult but does require a small amount of effort.

How to find good keywords!

Before you start to look for your keywords is much easier if you get a good keywords selector tool.  I like web tools but there are many more out there.   All you have to do is go to Google and search the term "keywords selector tool" and you will have plenty to choose from.  Once you find a good keywords selector tool then start typing in keywords relative to your business or service.

Do not go after keywords above 40,000 to 50,000 searches per month.  When you get above these numbers you're beginning to play in the arena with companies that spend a lot of money for SEO [search engine optimization] experts.   These companies pay a lot of money and have a huge staff to concentrate going after the larger numbers.

It's like fishing!

Would you much rather fish in the ocean where there is millions of fish or fish in a small lake where there's tens of thousands?   Your chance of getting exposure going after the smaller numbered keywords is greater than trying to go after the larger numbers.  Most people think that going after the larger numbers is the smart thing to do but this is not the case. Going after the keywords in the larger hit range will only push your website aside in place of the larger companies.

I know this because we have tried to go after top keywords and have found it a struggle in the beginning. I have also noticed that going after midrange keywords gives us better exposure and faster indexing.

With a good key word domain you now are in a better position to create sub domains using more targeted keywords. A subdomain is a domain that is part of a larger domain. For example, " example.com" is a subdomain of the "com" top-level domain (TLD) while " www.example.com" is a service in the domain "example.com". In fact, the "com" TLD is a subdomain of the root domain, ".". This hierarchical organization is similar to that in a filesystem; something is a subdomain if it could be equated to a folder, and a record within that subdomain to a file. Note, though, that DNS names are written in descending hierarchy right-to-left, where filesystems are written left-to-right.

Note that "subdomain" expresses relative dependence, not absolute dependence: for example, wikipedia.org comprises a subdomain of the org domain, and en.wikipedia.org comprises a subdomain of the domain wikipedia.org. In theory, this subdivision can go down to 127 levels deep, and each label can contain up to 63 characters, as long as the whole domain name does not exceed a total length of 255 characters. But in practice some domain registries have shorter limits than that. The

Understanding the difference between a domain and a subdomain enables you to understand how good key words in your domain name will be read by the Internet spiders. Each search engine has its own spiders that will constantly travels through all of the information on the Internet and index it relative to the keywords and how will find their searched.

Keywords are not just for domain names they are essential in the content on your website. The content has to be very key word rich and specific. Spiders love content "spider food" but only as it relates to the keywords within your own business.

For this report at our purpose is to make you aware of the importance of having good keywords in your domain name. But if you are a writer and can write good content and posted on the Internet through, blogs, web sites, ezine using great keywords and linking it back to your website that is keywords specific, you will be guiding the spiders back to your domain.

Next report will deal with domain hosting and what to look for in a hosting company.
